Australia Citizenship Application

There are a number of ways to obtain Australian Citizenship depending on your circumstances. Outlined below are some examples of the ways you may be eligible.

Citizenship by Conferral

Under this stream you must show that you have been lawfully resident in Australia for at least 4 years including at least 1 year as a Permanent Resident. You also must not have been absent from Australia for over a year and no longer than 90 days in the 12 months immediately before applying.

You can include the time spent on temporary visas (including bridging visas) before obtaining permanent residence in calculating the 4 years required above.

As part of the Citizenship application, you will be assessed on your character/criminal history and you will be required to undergo a Citizenship test (in most instances).

If your application is approved you will then be invited to a citizenship ceremony. Upon completion of your Citizenship ceremony, you can then obtain an Australian passport.

Citizenship by Birth

If a child is born in Australia and one parent is an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident you may obtain Australian Citizenship.

Citizenship by Descent

If a child is born overseas and at least one of the child’s parents is an Australian Citizen then that child may be eligible for Australian Citizenship.

Dual Citizenship

Australia is a country that allows dual Citizenship. This means that you can hold citizenship from another country while also holding Australian Citizenship. You are not required to give up your citizenship from another country if you decide to obtain Australian citizenship. However, the law of your country of citizenship may require you to give up their citizenship if you obtain Australian Citizenship (although many countries do not require this).

Where your (PR) Permanent Visa’s travel facility has run out (5 years after it was granted), or you simply do not want to take up Australian citizenship you could alternatively obtain a Resident Return Visa instead of Australian Citizenship.
